Street Tai Chi

4 Days a Week, Rain or Shine

We meet for Street Tai Chi, coffee, and burritos in a welcoming community. You’re always welcome to join at your own pace—watching first is perfectly okay.

We don’t believe cost should ever be a barrier to participation. Sessions are free, and no one is turned away. When available, additional support or incentives may be offered to help people participate on a consistent basis.

When: 9:30 AM every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday

Where: Washington Square Park, Salt Lake City

In front of the Salt Lake City & County Building

Address: 451 South State Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

What happens at a session

You don’t need experience.
You are enough, just as you are.

You can just show up. Volunteers arrive early to set up coffee, breakfast, water, and balance boards so the space feels warm and ready when people arrive.

1) Arrive + get welcomed (no pressure)

People drift in over ~15 minutes and often come up to an hour early in anticipation and socialize with the community. You’ll be greeted (often by name), grab coffee, and you’re welcome to watch first or join right in. New folks get a quick, friendly orientation.

2) Gentle check-in

A volunteer does a low-key attendance check-in (name / nickname is fine). It’s kept informal and privacy-respecting.

3) Balance boards + grounding

Participants help set boards out, and then we begin with a few minutes of simple balancing and micro-movements (with gentle tips if wanted). It’s okay to hold onto someone/something, step off, or take breaks.

4) Community-led Tai Chi (beginner-friendly)

As the city building’s clock rings and chimes, the group eases into motion. Led by someone living on the street—or recently transitioned from living outdoors—the flow is simple and repetitive, focused on slow movement, weight shifts, and breathing. The Tai Chi portion is typically ~20–30 minutes.

5) Closing circle + announcements

We close with a short learning circle where members have an opportunity to lead and be motivated for a 5 minute session, announcements, and an encouraging send-off.

6) Checkout support

After the circle, there’s a brief checkout where people may receive a small, consistent support benefit tied to attendance and respectful community conduct.  â€‹
